Bluehost Drupal Hosting Review

PRICE: $5.95/mo

Due to popular demand I've added this review of Bluehost for Drupal hosting. Bluehost is one of the bigger Drupal hosts around. They offer a tweaked / skinned version of cPanel that throws in some marketing stuff that they offer as add-ons to your hosting, but overall the skin is nice and integrated with the other parts of their system like support ticketing account management. We have clients who swear by Bluehost for their Drupal sites,  and until now we haven't had the chance to use their services.

Overview:
Bluehost is a much bigger operation that GreenGeeks, and probably bigger than ANHosting as well.  That size has benefits and disadvantages.  One of the main advantages they tout is this Resource Protection that gives you 'VPS-levels' of resource protection.  Supposedly this imposes a hard cap on CPU and memory usage that a single client on their servers can consume, protecting other users from overutilization by one client.

This is great in theory, but I'm not sure how well it will respond to things like a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attacks against their server.

So far our experience with them has been excellent.  Hardware is top notch and support options match the best out there.  The only negative we've experienced so far is that raw throughput (ie: download speeds of a large file from the server) isn't quite as fast as GreenGeeks, but otherwise performance is pretty much in-step.  Additionally, the Resource Protection, whether effective or not, does instill some sense of ease in my mind.  Lastly, they have a "Pro" package available for 19.95/mo (upsell during checkout) that looks to be an excellent choice for users needing to handle e-commerce or other more complex site setups.

Pros:

  • 8-16 core servers
  • SSH included
  • Toll free, US based support (with touted wait times averaging less than 30 seconds)
  • "Unlimited" Bandwidth
  • Very fast, even in Drupal admin screens
  • Good reported track record of uptime and reliability (reported by our user feedback)
  • Automated nightly backups (in case of server failure, etc)
  • "Resource Protection" to prevent bad-neighbor

Cons:

  • As with GreenGeeks, a longer term gets you better prices
  • Raw download speeds may not be the fastest around

Bandwidth Support Control Panel Free Domain? Max allowed domains Performance
Unlimited Phone, Email cPanel Yes, 1 free (w/ 1 or 2yr signups) Unlimited Best in class

Bottom Line:
We haven't been on our BlueHost account for real long yet, so It's difficult for me to provide a truly whole-hearted recommendation, but we've had overwhelming response from users (and clients) that BlueHost is the best value in shared hosting for a Drupal site.  Time will tell, and we'll update this review over time, but so far, we can't find too many bad points to mark on their service.
