GreenGeeks Drupal Hosting Review
PRICE: $4.95/mo (3 yr term) $6.95/mo (2 yr term)
Update - 6/12/2011
I've had some feedback from users that performance may be hit or miss lately. Namely it seems that clients placed on Server6 tend to experience more frequent outages due to DDOS attacks than users on other servers the company runs.
Server10 seems to be one of the machines they run that has a pretty good track record.
Background:
GreenGeeks seemed interesting since they positioned themselves as an environmentally responsible web-host, which was the reason these guys initially attracted me. However, after looking into them a bit more I realized they run a really nice hosting operation. They're priced a bit more on the 'premium' side of the shared hosting spectrum, and you get a more high-touch experience as a result. They cater to the CMS community, touting Drupal, Wordpress and Joomla on their site, and it feels like their servers are tuned to support Drupal really well.
They also recently became the official web host for "Drupal for Dummies", another sign that these guys are ready to competently handle my Drupal sites.
They've got everything going that I look for in a shared host. Great hardware, all kinds of support, SSH, cPanel without ads or custom modules and an "everything's included" price structure.
Pros:
- 8-16 core servers
- SSH included
- Everying I need is included by default so they don't upsell a bunch of add-ons.
- Toll free, North American based support (with VERY short hold times in my experience)
- Responsive email-ticket support as well
- Service Status enabled in cPanel to monitor server load etc.
- "Unlimited" Bandwidth
- Very fast, even in Drupal admin screens
- Uptime and server loads have been great so far
- Automated nightly backups (in case of server failure, etc)
Cons:
- You really need to sign a one or two-year agreement to get a good price
| Bandwidth | Support | Control Panel | Free Domain? | Max allowed domains | Performance |
| Unlimited | Phone, Email | cPanel | Yes, 1 free (w/ 1 or 2yr signups) | Unlimited | Best in class |
Bottom Line:
Even without the "Green" aspect, I'd say GreenGeeks is the best shared hosting provider I've been with. Pricing is quite reasonable for what you get, and really, paying more anywhere else probably won't get you anything better (short of moving up to a dedicated server anyway). Additionally, supporting tech companies that 'go green' is a really easy way to help out the environment, whether you're an eco-hipster or not.
(This site is hosted with GreenGeeks, along with several other production sites I run, and runs on Drupal 6 with minimal caching.)
